Welcome to the Maile Music Project

Welcome to the Maile Music Project, a collaboration between a father and grandfather to ensure an appreciation for music continues to the next generation. I’ll let Grandpa Mike explain:

My dear granddaughter Maile, with your daddy’s inspiration and your Papa Mike’s vast musical knowledge (and memory?), we hope to instill in you a love for popular music in all its forms, past, present, and future.

I am writing this forward on a cold bleak winter’s day in Boston, February 13, 2011.  You have just turned 19 months old, your dad has just had his “Larry Bird” birthday (just ask him!) and I am one month away from my 62nd year on this planet.  Popular music has taken many twists and turns over my lifetime — some have been absolutely “mind-blowing” (i.e significant) and others have been absolutely insignificant, derivative and “mind-deadening” (refer to Right Said Fred).

In the weeks and months to come, I hope to share my musical memories with you in order that you may absorb my life-long love of — as we say in Chicago — DA ROCK AND DA ROLL!!!!  Enjoy my selections and notes — there will be no final exam, and THE BEAT GOES ON!!!!

Love, Papa Mike

As for where the “inspiration” came from that Grandpa Mike references above – ever since I saw the School of Rock movie with Jack Black, I thought it’d be fun to create an immersive experience around the rock and roll history outline he did on the chalkboard. But add a personal twist to it.

The inspiration for the Maile Music Project

When my daughter, Maile, was born, it all came together. Not only did I have inspiration, but now also a purpose!

Finally, I thought it’d be a really fun project to do with my dad – he taught me so much about music growing up. There are plenty of things I’ll be able to teach Maile, but with music, I knew it was best to go right to the source.

And thus, the Maile Music Project was born. We hope you enjoy following along…

Dude, the right part is so awful. Did you make it?
Punk rock and New Wave influenced by Hard rock?? No. And btw where is garage rock?
That generic 80′s incorporating bands who have not much in common and Fugazi whose first album is from 1990
